The Surfers Paradise Foreshore Redevelopment
Redevelopment of the Surfers Paradise foreshore will reconnect the heart of Surfers Paradise with the beach, creating a unique open space that delivers environmental, social and economic benefits for the city.
Background information
In 2007, Gold Coast City Council endorsed the Surfers Paradise Foreshore Masterplan which focuses on transforming the foreshore from its current state to a heavily used urban plaza that links with park areas.
In 2009 Council endorsed the Surfers Paradise foreshore redevelopment as part of a $90 million economic stimulus package which will provide employment opportunities to Gold Coast workers as well as providing much needed infrastructure for the city.
In September 2009, Council appointed Abigroup Contractors Pty Ltd as the Managing Contractor to undertake the redevelopment of Surfers Paradise’s Foreshore.
Funding
The Surfers Paradise foreshore redevelopment is a $25 million project funded by Gold Coast City Council ($20 million) and Queensland State Government ($5 million).
In addition, Juniper Group - the owners of the new Soul development on The Esplanade – will be carrying out foreshore works in front of their site. These works will be fully funded by Juniper, following Council’s design to ensure consistency throughout the foreshore redevelopment.
Community Consultation
A series of consultation sessions were held with stakeholders to ensure their requirements were reflected in the foreshore design. A community open day was held in Surfers Paradise in August 2009 to display the foreshore design and inform the community of the scope of works.
Local Industry Participation
Council aims to maximise the number of Gold Coast based sub-contractors and suppliers participating in the construction of the Surfers Paradise foreshore redevelopment. Letters were sent to around 5000 relevant businesses in December 2009, inviting them to register their interest in working on the project by completing an online survey.
Information collected has been given to the project’s managing contractor, Abigroup for consideration in hiring sub-contractors and suppliers for the project.
